~100% Man Made~

Man Made Ensemble header

So, I’ve been stamping and papercrafting for about 13 years now.  I’ve never been known for my clean and simple cards.  Oh no.. I’ve always embraced the more is more theory; sometimes to a fault.

Recently I heard that some stampers/papercrafters were interested in seeing more patterned paper options.  Others were looking for male cards.  One thing I’ve never tried was the One Sheet Wonder.  If you don’t know what that is, it’s the practice of taking a 12 x 12 piece of designer paper and making as many cards that you can incorporating a portion of that 12 x 12 piece.

I decided to challenge myself to incorporate those requests in one project.  I created 3 male cards using 2 pieces of 6.5 x 6.5″ patterned paper (modified One Sheet Wonder) .

My instinct was to put MORE on the front of the tote. It’s strikingly plain.  Then the minimalist in me said, “It’s fine”.  I used the Splitcoaststampers tutorial seen here.  I did modify it so the cards are only on one side.  Just my preference.

First I started with a birthday card.  I’m a ribbonista, and I knew that wouldn’t be appropriate (although I so wanted to add lace!), so cord it is!

I actually broke my corner rounder making this card… ugh!  Oh well, a trip to Michael’s is in order anyway.

And finally, a congratulations

Welcome to 2017!  I’m one of those “early to bed” people who rarely sees the ball drop and Saturday night was no exception.  Oddly enough, I woke up about 10 minutes to midnight and heard the brief firework display.  I was fast asleep moments later.

A new year means a whole slew of birthdays.  I figure I had better get a move on.  I also had a hankering to color.  I haven’t colored much in months, so I scratched that itch.

~When All Else Fails…~

Smile header 1

On December 23rd, my dear Granny transitioned into her heavenly body.  She was just about 2 months past her 100th birthday.  While we are saddened a bit because she’s gone, we are rejoicing in the fact that she is where she has wanted to be.  During her last couple of weeks, she expressed the desire to “see my daddy”.  It’s a really different kind of grieving when the deceased is over 100 years old.

So, we are talking about her a lot.  We’re laughing.  We’re crying.  And, we’re smiling.  My card today is to honor her.

It’s cold.  I mean below zero with wind.  Frigid.  So, you would think I would get a lot done in the studio, but nope.  It’s just a few days before Christmas and I have so many gifts to wrap and cookies to bake and projects to finish up.  Sleep is not going to be an option, but COFFEE is!

I’ve always been a coffee drinker.  I get it from my Granny, who drank coffee around the clock.  She doesn’t drink it any longer as she is quite frail and her caretakers are afraid she’ll burn herself.

So today, let’s have some coffee and girl talk!

Lets Chat L2

Ok, first, the coffee cups are exactly the same color as the polka dot strip, but no matter what I did with my camera, it just flatly refused to photograph that way.  Second, I am in love with this card.  The color combo is so rich and the copper layer makes me swoon.  I added a little watermark using Rich Cocoa ink.  And don’t get me started on the wired sheer ribbon.  I finally feel like I can make consistently gorgeous bows.

Suave Birthday header 2

We temporarily interrupt Christmas crafts to bring you the McMillen household December birthdays.  My #2 son is turning 29 on Wednesday.  I can’t even wrap my head around that concept.  His given name is Zachary Kane McMillen, but my oldest brother nicknamed him Zeke when he was just a few months old.  I really didn’t like the moniker, but it stuck.  He’s been Zeke ever since.

Making male cards in general are not easy to do.  I love bows and flowers and bling on cards, but that is not who my guys are, so I keep it simple.

I love these colors for Zeke.  He’s an artist, musician, linguist, writer and creator of great magnitude.

Is anyone else just floored that it’s December 5th, already?!  I am usually way ahead of the game at this point, but frankly, it’s getting harder and harder to buy gifts or make gifts for my (adult) children.  Since they’re all on their own, two of them married, they tend to buy what they need and often what they want.  This is another cry for grandchildren! LOL

Took a little diversion from typical Christmas colors and bring you browns, creams and olives.  I’m loving it!

dreaming of a white christmas header

Happy Monday!  Hubby is back to work today after four days off, so I’m all confused as to what day it is.  Not use to having him around so much, but it was awesome!

After finishing up the Wreath Frames, I’m now in high gear to finish the kids’ wedding album.  I’m looking forward to giving it all my time for the next couple weeks.  I promise to share when I’m done.

Have you noticed a trend in my cardmaking this Christmas season?  Snowflakes.  Everywhere!  I must resist the snowflakes! LOL

Ok, but first, this week we have Teal and Snowflakes!

frame inspiration

Part 1 of this post can be seen here.

Well, I trust that everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving, here in the US.  My family will be celebrating (unconventionally, as usual) on Saturday… which happens to be my birthday, as well.  No turkey this year.  My kitchen is so small that it’s difficult to cook on a normal day, let alone a big meal.  So, we’re having lasagna!

Completing these frames has been a labor of love.  I was up many nights working on them so that I could present them at Thanksgiving.

First up… Let it Snow

White Frame complete 2

Sadly, the tree and snowmen dies are no longer available, but I have linked to a few dies that would be suitable substitutes.

After I die cut the pieces, I ran them through my laminator.  This way, if it is hung on an outside door, the pieces are protected.

The bows were, well EASY!  I used the Bigger Bow Easy and wired ribbon.  I have a renewed love for wired ribbon.

I die cut snowflakes from the Spellbinders Die – Create A Flake Six set, then stacked them.  Then I literally painted them onto the frame.  After all was dry, I added glitter to the snowflakes.

Here’s a closeup of the bow array:

White Frame Ribbon 1

~*~*~*~

Next up is the tan frame…

Tan Frame Complete 2

The sayings for these frames were cut from adhesive vinyl, using my Silhouette Cameo.

I added some wired Christmas plaid (my all time favorite).  It feels like a flannel shirt!

The frame was embossed using the Tim Holtz Layering Stencil – Woodgrain and Dreamweaver Embossing Paste.  It was then highlighted with some Memento Dye Ink Pad – Rich Cocoa.

Here is the bow arrangement…

Tan Frame Ribbon 1

~*~*~*~

And finally, the red frame (which has already been gifted to my aunts)..

 Red Frame complete 2

For this frame, I added fine art sand to the paint to give it a gritty look and feel.  The “dots” you see around the frame are actually glitter glue dots and they really sparkle!

The fun “extras” (floral picks) were super cheap and I love how they add volume.

Let me tell you.. if you’re going to have a go at one of these, make sure you have a good quality glue gun.  It helps to have a carpenter in your house, too! LOL

And the bows…

Ok, now I’m going to share lots of links!

~ Golden Noel ~

Golden Noel header

Well, the hustle and bustle has definitely started off our holiday season.  Now that the boys all live away from home, it’s quite a drama getting them all together at once.  My #3 son and his wife are driving in from the east coast next week, so I’ll be preoccupied with praying for their travels.  My #4 son has a new girl in his life, so we’re now talking about several split holidays.

Today I’m going with a lot of glitz!  I think everything should be glittery… especially at Christmas!  My favorite thing to do is watch the lights and glitz sparkle in a child’s eye, or if no kids are around, it works with my cat, too! :)

This card sparkles so much!  I took a different shot to help see…

frame inspiration

I have a very special project to share with you this week.  This is the first part.  The wrap up will be posted on Thursday, November 23rd.

I’ve been very excited to do this project, which was born from a post I saw on Pinterest.  I cannot post the entire picture, as I do not have the owner’s permission.  However, the header above shows a piece of my muse.

I’m calling them window wreaths, for now.   For my project, the frames were made by my husband and I’ve added photos below to show his process.  Honestly, it was so simple that I know I could do it myself.  You can also shop your favorite reclaimed store for an old window frame!

First he ripped the wood down to create a frame 15″ wide on the inside and the frame itself is 3″ wide.

SAM_1185

1″ x 6″ Pine (chosen for light weight) . Rabbit cut / recess for plexiglass.

SAM_1186

Using a compound miter saw cut corners at 45 degree angle.

SAM_1188

If you don’t have access to the electric saw, you can do the same with a miter box.

SAM_1190

Corners were glued with wood glue then pin nailed together.

SAM_1189

Ready to paint!

Frame texturing with sand

I did a test run for my three different textures.

SAM_1227

Red frame has a sand mixture added to the paint.  The texture is rough with a lot of interest..

20161104_091236

The tan frame was taped off where the trim (1/4″ x 3/4″)  would go.

SAM_1239

Using Tim Holtz woodgrain stencil and

Dreamweaver Embossing Paste – Regular White

I painted two coats after the trim was put on.  I have a little extra addition coming up!

20161105_104444

I sponged on some Memento Rich Cocoa ink over the relief areas and let it sit to dry.

Now they’re off to the garage again to have plexi-glass installed!

~*~*~*~

I’m up to my eyeballs in ribbons and such.   I’ll be back in a couple days with the wrap up!

Thanks for stopping by!  Come back soon!

Part 2 of this post can be found here.
